Fourth Grade
Mrs. Terela
Welcome to our Fourth Grade! At this level of learning, an integrated focus on New York
State encompasses our many subject areas. As a self-contained classroom, all our
subjects are interwoven for optimal learning.
Here is a breakdown of our subjects and some highlights from each:
Reading:
The core of this program is designed to develop successful, lifelong readers, by introducing
quality literature which includes favorite selections from a rich variety of genres. Skill
development includes comprehension, vocabulary, word study, phonics, oral language, and
critical thinking skills.
Writing:
The major areas of the language arts curriculum include the following: writing, grammar,
correct usage, mechanics, dictionary and library skills, speaking and listening skills.
Integration of the above help students perceive the curriculum as an interrelated whole,
leading to competency in other curricular areas.
Social Studies:
The Fourth Grade text presents the history of New York chronologically, with an integration of
geography, the humanities, citizenship, and economics. Skills include map and globe,
reading content area text, reading charts and graphs, and writing. We strive for a connection
between Social Studies content and skills for practical use as citizens.
Science:
This program is based on the National Science Education Standards. Four units of study
include: life science, physical science, earth science, and the human body. Students have
access to science content along with hands on labs and activities, practicing the use of the
scientific method.
Math:
The focus of this program is on helping students make sense of math in meaningful ways-
for academic success and for everyday life. The scope and sequence of the math curriculum
includes: numbers and operations; place value and money; time, data and graphs;
geometry and measurement; fraction concepts and operations; decimals and metric
measurement; graphing and probability.
Religion:
Our sharing of faith includes many dimensions: instruction in doctrine, scripture and
morality, the experience of prayer and liturgy, the building of a value system, respect for and
love of the Catholic Church.
Along with academics, we enjoy correlating the calendar year of holidays and events into arts
and activities. We partner up as “buddies” with our Kindergarten for seasonal art projects.
We enhance our writing skills with themed book reports, penpals, and creative journaling.
Participation in community sponsored events showcases our learning endeavors-Invention
Convention, Annual Poetry Recital at Binghamton University, and use of our historical sites,
such as the Phelps Mansion and Roberson Museum for educational field trips.
We culminate our learning experience with a visit to historic Cooperstown in the month of
May. While there we enjoy a variety of activities at the Farmer’s Museum and Baseball Hall of
Fame. Last, we share a family dinner together at Brooks House of Barbecue.
Above all the main focus of our daily learning emphasizes our Catholic and Christian based
beliefs in respect for one another, while striving to always do our Personal Best.We invite you
to join us!
